George W Bill HUMPHREY’S PHOTO ALBUM.

Arborfield Army Technical School.

Intake No.1 May 1939

To the A.O.B.A. Membership Office.

Bill Humphrey writes: “Application for Life Membership of the A.O.B.A.”  You will see that I have entered on my application form “Intake No.1 and Company A”  as I believe that is so, but I am not certain. I checked into the school on the morning of Monday 1st of May 1939 aged 14 years and was put into Barrack Room A1 where I think I stayed for some time. As I remember, we changed rooms as we got older and may also have changed Companies.

Bill Humphrey writes: I am the little fellow. second from the right, second row from the top, with a smile on my face and wearing a cap with an Ordnance badge you’ll notice.  We were not R.E.M.E. yet. A smaller copy of the same was stuck into a small Christmas Card which we purchased to send home and printed at the bottom was Christmas 1939.

Ian Rea (Bramley 1938 – Arborfield 1939) came up with some additions and corrections to the Nominal Rolls 1936 – 1940 section, and contributed some more details of the photographs on this page.

Ian writes: The leading photo listed as Intake N0.1 ‘A’  Company I believe is actually ‘D’ Company. I recognise many faces, including in the second row from the front, extreme right, me! Also recognised is Captain Johnson along with Sgt ‘Jock’ Auld of the K.O.S.B.s. The other sergeant is possibly Sgt ‘Turkey’ Cooper.

Editor’s note: The photo above shows two distinct uniform styles.  Service Dress with peaked cap, collar dogs and white belts alongside Service Dress with forage cap, no collar dogs and a webbing belt.  Also noticed are white stripes and Good Conduct stripes.  A mixture of apprentices originating from two different training establishments?

The photo below of boys from Jersey shows one style but noticeable is a wide webbing cross strap.  Possibly a gas mask?

Ian Rea (Bramley 1938 – Arborfield 1939) writes: The photo above I recognise as ‘C’ Block of ‘D’ Company which includes my good friend Peter Humpston, front row 3rd from the right, (Jersey 1938 – Arborfield 1939) along with Dick Ludford front row 2nd from the right, (also Jersey 1938 – Arborfield 1939).  I was in ‘J’ Block of ‘D’ Company..
