1936 – 1940 This section of the Nominal Rolls Project is probably the most difficult to record accurately. The Arborfield Technical School officially opened in May 1939 and boys already serving apprenticeships in a variety of locations transferred in. Many also arrived from abroad and the various military schools, Queen Victoria’s at Dunblane and the Duke of York’s Royal Military School to name just two. Recent contact from some of the ‘39ers show that many names are missing from our lists here. Not only that, after contacting the Arborfield Old Boys Association it appears that a whole raft of names are missing from their rolls at the REME Museum. With valuable help from Keith Evans, Asst. Secretary of the AOBA I hope to present a more accurate record of names, although the dates of joining will be subject to some speculation. For instance, the names in the lists before May the 1st wouldn’t have reached Arborfield before then, but that is how they are recorded in the AOBA lists, just one of many puzzles to solve. After all, these lads were the pioneers of the Arborfield School that we served at and their names should be recorded. They are entitled to expect nothing less.
