Note: In Dec 1974 I was short listed for a posting back to DDEME Inspectorate, Catterick Camp. My family had by then taken up residence in Exeter, Devon; my two older children were approaching transition to High School, and to avoid moving them around at a difficult stage of their lives I decided to terminate my Service engagement. As I was then serving on a three-years extension of Service with one month’s notice either way it was a convenient time to leave.

Summary of other Courses attended: Refrigeration Fitter; Regimental Signaller 3 Star; Methods of Instruction; Modern Weapons; Air Dropped Equipment Inspector; First Aid & Light Rescue.

CIVILIAN CAREER

Until I became settled as a civilian I initially took a position as Domestic Appliance Engineer – with possibilities. It turned out to be a glorified refrigerator/freezer/washing machine/dishwasher/vacuum cleaner serviceman. Lesson: don’t be fooled by Curry’s Group Service advertisements.

I then became a Shift Plant Engineer for a Company that produced precision investment castings for the aerospace & vehicle industries, using vacuum casting & induction methods – another very interesting job.

After emigrating to Australia I initially went to work in the far northwest of Western Australia for a major iron ore Mining Company as a Training Officer, firstly training Fitters on mechanical mining equipment & mineral processing equipment, progressing to Supervisory Training of all levels of Management & Supervision. I was promoted to Corporate Training & Development Officer prior to my departure to a cooler climate in Perth, Western Australia, leaving the Company for another position. I had spent 10 years in Port Hedland, Western Australia, so it couldn’t have been too bad.

My final position, lasting a little over 10 years, was as Western Australian Government Special Inspector of Mines (Mechanical) – another very satisfying job, covering a vast area of some 625 miles by 1,000 miles for which there were just two Inspectors. My co-Inspector was also ex-REME, but of shorter Service.

When I reached the age of 60 years I had only 7 months to complete until I reached the 10 years service in the Government Superannuation Scheme that then became more attractive to those about to retire. I completed my final three months on Long Service Leave before returning to work for one day in order to complete my time.

It took me some 6 months to acquire the vehicle that I wanted to tow our caravan, and then spent the following two-and-a half years comprehensively touring every State in Australia. I have now returned to Perth and live with great enjoyment and pleasure close to the sea, my wife’s family and our friends in paradise at Warnbro, Western Australia.
