Photos Of The Maralinga Atomic Weapons Test Range Base Camp.

1. Unit Identification.

2. Maralinga Airfield, operated jointly by both RAF and RAAF personnel. The aircraft is a de Havilland DH 104 Devon C.1, a military derivative of the DH 104 Dove.

3. Commonwealth Railways, daily goods and passenger mixed.   (Now Indian Pacific railway)   Perth - Adelaide - Sydney and return.

4. Watson Halt on the longest continuous straight stretch of railway line in the world. This halt provides

a Security  Control, Postal and Supply Depot plus rail line maintenance depot.

5. Range Headquarters and Administration Building. All buildings are constructed of aluminium and are fully air conditioned.  Temperatures of 46 degrees C are not uncommon in mid-summer.

6. Other Ranks mess. The standard of food was excellent and the Service provided by  RAF and RAAF personnel.

7. Air conditioned cinema.  New program every second evening.

8. All denominational church, situated at the extreme West point of the village.

9. Village shop. Selling cigarettes, soft drinks, ice cream, photographic equipment (subject to security approval) reading material, non-subscription medicines etc.

10. Sports Arena. Built with much hard labour to obtain good quality grass area for football cricket etc. and built in watering system using desalinated water from bore holes.  Col. Durance was the Australian Range Commander at the time of completion.  The senior U.K. officer was the Chief Engineering officer R.E. (Major)

11. Swimming pool. Complete with filtration and cooling systems, diving pit and low board.  Constructed by the Royal Engineers and built above ground using the surrounding stepped walls as the sides. Much cherished by all who sunk in her.

12. Village entrance seen from the direction of both rail and air facilities. This is London Road the main road and looking toward the West.

13. Main road looking East.  Commonwealth Police and BFPO buildings on the immediate left, REME Workshop, the largest building just beyond.

14. Commonwealth flagpole and ceremonial area on London Road opposite the HQ building.

18. Main Road to Watson.  26 miles long in an almost straight line, apart from a small section of bends through some sand hills.
