Passing-Out Parade

Friday, 25th July 1952

LIFE'S all getting and giving,

   I've only myself to give.

What shall I do for a living?

I've only one life to live.

End it? I'll not find another.

Spend it? But how shall I best?

Sure the wise plan is to live like a man

And Luck may look after the rest!

Largesse! Largesse, Fortune!

Give or hold at your will.

If I've no care for Fortune,

   Fortune must follow me still.

Rudyard Kipling

“Get on parade!”:

Chris MOLESWORTH, the unfortunate butt of many cruel jokes, was subjected to one final indignity - his new beret was nailed to his bedside locker and he had difficulty detaching it when the order came to “Get on parade”. Needless to explain, it sustained serious injury in his haste to comply.

The final parade at Arborfield in our honour followed a long-established format, one with which we had become very familiar, having at regular intervals taken part in similar parades for each of the five Divisions ahead of us. Preparation had been intense, our turnout was expected to be nothing less than perfect, and our foot-drill and arms-drill performed as one man.

I had miraculously survived the trials, tribulations and rigours along the road that had taken me from boyhood to manhood, and although my achievements along the route had been limited and hard-won, I was conscious of the fact that I had learned more during the past three years than I had ever done during the years at school in India and England, although not quite enough to satisfy the high standards of my examiners. But it was a start; my future was placed very firmly in my own hands; it was left up to me to succeed or fail.

Leave:

The prospect of spending leave at home didn’t exactly excite my senses, and the only part of it that I was looking forward to was the week that Dave Perrott and I had planned to spend camping at Owlpen, Gloucestershire, where I spent a small portion of my youth. His account is more than adequately covered in: “Camping Memories – August 1952”.

Dispersion

Compiled from official records, this list only includes the survivors of Intake 49B and those who had been relegated from Intake 49A who, in the main, passed the final trade test to become qualified tradesmen, and three who marginally failed the final trade test and were classified as ‘Learner Tradesmen’ [L/T]. These personnel were posted to Regular Army units with effect from 29th August 1952. Not listed are those who were relegated to Intake 50A, or transferred to other arms of the Service, and those who were discharged for various reasons.
