Editor’s Note

Alan Calder of Sydney, Australia, had previously provided some information on one of the existing ‘Tripoli’ photos on site.  Now Alan has contributed some of his own photos which dovetail nicely into the story of life in Libya 1956 to 1959.

Finalists: Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers XI.

 

Three team members named in the first photo are pictured above.

Kneeling: No.1 Alan Calder. 5 Medium Workshop, R.E.M.E.   

Standing: No.6 Cfn. Jones and 8 (wearing the soft cap) Captain Wakely who was i/c the LAD REME attached to 10th. Armoured Division, Royal Signals Regiment based at Gialo Barracks.  Jones was Capt. Wakely’s driver. ‘The Editor’ was also a member of the LAD and all three of us can be seen in a photo of the unit contributed by David Croton, REME.

Photographing the mural was bedevilled by light streaming in via open doors and windows.

 

The North African coast from Tripoli to Tobruk will be remembered by many of those who trained in Libya.

 

One can keep abreast of the coastal locations from Tobruk to Alexandria in Egypt.
