Burmese Apprentices Today

In this section we hope to catch up with some of our Burmese Apprentice friends in their lives after returning home.

We start with photos contributed by Nyunt Shwe 54B Arborfield who has been instrumental in supplying so much of the information and photographs published in these pages and to whom we give our vote of thanks.

Whaso Robes Offering Ceremony.

Nyunt Shwe 54B Arborfield, writes that: On the 26th of August 2007, at my home in Rangoon, Myanmar, there was held a Whaso Robes Offering Ceremony in which new Yellow Robes were donated to the Buddhist Monks who follow the religious doctrine of the Lord Buddha.

In the beliefs of Buddhism, alms, clothing and shelter for the Monks are totally dependent upon donors.

The first photograph shows the Monks preaching to the donors of the Whaso Yellow Robes.

The second photograph is of the group of ex apprentices, donors who gathered for the ceremony, and includes Old Boys from Arborfield, Chepstow and Harrogate Army Apprentices Schools.

The following photograph has been contributed by Mrs Anne Win, widow of Zaw Win 55B Harrogate.  It shows a reunion party of Army Apprentices from the three schools which was held at the PP Restaurant, Yangon, Myanmar, on the 20th December 1998.  It is not very sharp but certainly worth displaying as a record of our Burmese lads in later life.

The photo below has also been contributed by Mrs Anne Win. It was taken outside the Feel Restaurant, Yangon, on the 9th of February 2008 during a visit to Burma.

Anne writes: Nyunt Shwe, Soe Tint and more apprentices kindly invited me and Zaw Win’s relatives to join them for lunch to welcome me to Yangon. I really appreciated the friendliness and kindness I received from all the lads and their families during my visit.

Since the photo was taken, Burma has been devastated by a cyclone and communications were severed.

Anne writes: I eventually made contact with Maung Maung Aye in Bogaley, one of the worst hit areas, and where most of the family live. They have survived without too many injuries but all of their houses were destroyed and they are being cared for by friends.

Left to Right: Soe Tint 54A Harrogate, Soe Yin 53B Harrogate, Nyunt Shwe 54B Arborfield, Thein San 52B Arborfield, Anne Win, Thet Tin 54B Chepstow, Maung Maung Aye, brother of Zaw Win 55B Harrogate who was Anne’s late husband, Aye Thet Win, daughter of Maung Maung Aye.

This photo came from Joe Khaine, son of Nyunt Shwe. Taken in Bangkok, Thailand, after the cyclone had struck Burma with such devastating effect. We await news of our other Burmese Apprentices in the region.

The next three photos have been contributed by Ms Tin Tin Nyunt, wife of Soe Tint 54A, Harrogate AAS.

The photos are of Soe Tint with two of his daughters in Norway. The elder is working in Stavanger, and the youngest of the children was there to accompany her father home.

Ms Tin Tin Nyunt writes

Dear Trevor,

I'm Soe Tint's wife, Ms Tin Tin Nyunt, now visiting our middle daughter in Norway. We, my husband and I, take turns to visit our daughter. My husband had been to Norway twice, last year and the year before. Maybe he will be coming to Norway once I'm back home in YANGON, Myanmar.

He has long ago retired from the services and enjoying a leisurely life at home, visiting friends in Yangon and all over the country. He is in good health.  But sometimes he's very quiet and spends time sleeping or a very quiet time watching TV, Videos and sleeping, of course. He enjoyed his time in Harrogate and used to brag about it.

We have 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons- the eldest two- a daughter and a son, got married and now have 6 grand children. My husband is now 77 years old, so he's having an easy life though he missed his time in England.

Regards,

Tin Tin Nyunt

PS Nyunt Shwe is also in Yangon, in downtown area and my husband met him now and then. So also is Khin Nyunt, retired from military services now. They also meet on special occasions- Only in last year December, on our house warming day, we met them. (TTN)

Below, the greeting has been contributed by Kin Maung Win, 55B, Chepstow AAS.
